[Fr] Fool's Paradize... est enfin là ! ¤ [En] Fool's Paradize... is here at last!

[Fr]

Quite a little badge of honor of mine, that’s what Fool’s Paradize… is.

At the time of Rêve…’s composition, the idea that one day this series of words would be translated in English never crossed my mind.
First, because its very outlet value wouldn’t allow me then to see past the present moment, far from it, so far from it; second, because anyway at the time, I was yet to read a book in English without using a dictionary at each page, not really insignificant!

However, I must admit, since my discovery of Baudelaire, I have always been thrilled by the desire to stumble on a bookish meandering – in a bookstore or a library – upon the quite physical ink-and-paper materialization of one series of words of mine.

Though, since I notice Baudelaire’s deception (cf my post on the subject) and the blind massacre, more or less violent, of Poe’s work I promised myself that I would translate my own texts as much as possible, in the event of such opportunity presenting itself.

The awfully poor translation of an entire passage of a novel of one of my favorite writers (when you can see through the translation, that’s one awfully poor translation), the reading of Julian Green’s theory about bilingualism and translation, the lot coupled with my very own experience of my mother-tongue and of my heart-tongue; all of this does that I won’t ever let anyone translate my texts into English (American or British) in my stead.

As for the others languages, I’m leaving it to literary translators and throw at them a warm: “I’m in your hands, ladies and gentlemen!

Just like Rêve…, Fool’s Paradize… is available in ebook format on Smashwords: either on its own plateforme, or on retailer ones such as Fnac, Barnes & Noble, Schuler Books, Blio (for Fool’s Paradize… only), OverDrive or the iBookstore – thus available on the Nook, Kobo, Kindle, Kindle Fire e-readers and on iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch!

Apart from the language, both versions of my series of words differ on one other distinct point, acknowledgements – special feature of the US version!

No, can’t do.

But why this choice to translate into American English and not into British English, you ask.

A simple matter of preference.

Though it may seem overly anecdotal, one of the reasons can be found in the acknowledgements: “a friend from across the ocean.”
The main reason – overly subjective and instinctive – remains in the fact that after the choice of the title in its translated version, I couldn’t possibly see or conceive the word paradize with an S instead of a Z. It could only be a Z, nothing else.

Both letters symbolize a back-and-forth movement. The reader wavers between dream and reality just like the narrator doubting of the reality of the event unfolding right in front of her eyes.
Sure.

Except… except that the letter S has always made me think of a not so reassuring hissing snake. So no. Even if Kaa has always made me laugh in Disney’s adaptation of Kipling’s Jungle Book, no. Nope, can’t do. No way.

As for the letter Z, if it symbolizes an end and thereby the cause or hope for rebirth, it’s also THE symbol used to make us understand that someone is sleeping and dreaming…

(Do you see the reason now?
Not so subtle, I grant you this.)

Now, the translation of the word paradis takes a Z in American English and not in British English, hence the choice of language for the English version of my series of words.

An overly subjective preference then: an orthographic mise en abyme of the title coupled with a graphic mise en abyme of the cover.

We have come full circle!

[Fr] Rêve… fait peau neuve ¤ [En] Rêve… gets a facelift

 [Fr]

Let’s be clear here, the first cover of Rêve…, I’m rather proud of it – it marked my beginnings in the publishing world and the very first ebook publication of my series of words.

But here the thing, if the adventure with Bookstory seemed interesting at first, there is no choice but to accept that the concept doesn’t work.
Lack of professionalism from the team?
Lack of realism?
Unfortunately, yes.

Two years ago, the idea of seeing my work finally chosen by a supervisory committee had the effect of a nitrogen protoxide shot. However, the mirth was short-lived.

There has been talk of revising the price bracket: 6€ for a 300-page ebook, OK; 6€ or 4€ for a 50-or-so-page ebook, that’s ridiculous at the very least. No matter how neat the cover and the synopsis, even I wouldn’t buy it.
Subject approached when the publishing contrast has been signed and… and nothing, zilch, nada, que dalle!

There has been talk of creating new covers – why not – long before the creation of new collection names, more than a year ago.
Two or three isolated emails, not a shadow of a proposition!

There has been talk of a formation on self-advertisement via regular video conferences. Only one video conference, last year!

Therefore, from one disappointment to the next, seeing no real concretization coming, the idea of creating my own new cover and of waiting for the fulfillment of some clauses of the publishing contract in order to move on to another path – self-publishing – took shape.

Quite frankly, lately, Rêve… only remained on the Bookstory website for the display and the presence on the Internet. And this until I find a self-publishing plateform to my liking.

Entrance of Smashwords.

A new publishing experience means a new cover, hence a drastic change of the making up of the cover: clear, clean, a graphic mise-en-abîme even of the title and of my series of words.

The dream is a time in suspension.
The title, followed by suspension points, enhances this time.
The projected shadow of the title gives the impression that the title itself, and the story by extension, is a time in suspension.

This March 5th, 2015, in Brussels, the Court of Justice of the European Union settled: in France, the VAT applied on eBook would no longer be of 5.5 % as on print copy, but will go back to the 20 % rate.

The reason: the eBook is a digitalized good, it is to be considered as a service, not a cultural good.

Well.

Let’s just be pragmatic here for a minute. What is the difference between an eBook and a print copy? The medium.

The only difference is the medium!

So, for the Court of Justice of the European Union, an eBook isn’t considered to be a fully-fledged book. But does the CJEU dearest know that two millennia back, the book as we know it wasn’t itself considered to be a real book either?

De ces langages découlent tous les autres.

Little historical and cultural reminder on the book’s evolution. Let’s go back in time then, way before the tradition of copyist monks and Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press in 1455.

The invention of writing precedes that of the book.

To date, Mesopotamia is considered to be the cradle of writing. Sumerian, and its cuneiform script, is believed to be the oldest known written language, born around 3600 B.C.. Initially, Sumerian was a reliable method to record transactions, trade and administration too complicated for the human’s memorization capability.

The Egyptian hieroglyph (literally sacred ‘hiero’ character ‘glyphe’) appeared around 3300 B.C.. Some specialists go as far as asserting that despite their differences, cuneiform script and Egyptian hieroglyph might have the same origin.

In pre-Columbian Central America, glyphic script appeared around 2000/1500 B.C. with the setting up of calendars.

In China, the shell-bone script, named after those characters also known as divinatory characters carved into animal bones or tortoise shells, appeared around 1400 B.C..

From these languages follow all the others.

Writing means media: clay, stone, bone, papyrus, wood, bamboo, leather, metal, fabrics.

Stone is the archetypal medium of a civilization fundamental texts and administrative codes.
Wood tablets, plain or covered with stucco or wax, were used for the learning process and for utilitarian documents.
The most precious materials such as gold, silk or ivory were saved for gods and princes.

So after the oral tradition comes the written tradition.

According to Denis Muzerelle definition, a book designates a portable gathering of items presenting a plane surface on which a text can be written and last for a long time.

In Egyptian and Chinese traditions, the first books took the form of a scroll called volumen, made of papyrus for the Egyptian, of silk then of paper for the Chinese. The text is arranged in columns perpendicularly lined-up to the length of the scroll.

In the Hellenistic and Roman time, papyrus was almost produced in an industrial way in Egypt in order to satisfy the needs of the entire Mediterranean world.

Occasional documents aside, the whole of the Ancient Egypt and of the Greco-Roman classical Antiquity are written down on scrolls.

Codex : De civitate dei (La cité de Dieu)
Saint Augustin d'Hippone (354–430)

In the 2nd century B.C., parchment came out in the Library of Pergamun, Asia Minor, in order to replace the papyrus, Egypt’s monopoly at the time, and to rival the Library of Alexandria.

Made out of treated animal skin, strong, writable on both sides, the parchment can be fold easily into sheets that are then gathered in notebook. This lead to a fundamental change in book history: the volumen was replaced by the codex, the ancestor of the modern book.

The relation to the book changes, the notion of page appears, le reader no longer needs both hands to hold a book.

Between the 2nd and the 4th century, the codex gradually replaced the volumen. Gradually indeed, but not without reluctance: the codex wasn’t considered to be an object of knowledge like the volumen, it was thus not considered to be a real book!

Ring a bell?

For the historical point of view, in The Birth of the Codex, published in 1983, Robert & Skeat recount an anecdote that may bring a smile to a few faces nowadays.
During the 3rd century, a dispute between two sons was settled by a Roman judge. One of the sons inherited the books of his father. But what did the term book designate? Solely the papyrus scrolls or did it include also the codexes? The answer of the judge came out:
“The codexes must be regarded as books. Scrolls of papyri are not contained under the label book, but a mode of writing aiming at a definite end is.”

For the pure linguistic point of view, in Latin, livre (book) comes from the word liber which firstly designates a live part of the sapwood directly under the bark a tree; lire un livre (to read a book) is said evolvere librum, that is to say unroll the papyrus.
Do note the similar root of the English word book that comes from the proto-germanic word bōks, meaning beech.

In our modern world, dematerialization is omnipresent or nearly so and develops on the double.

Dematerialization invades our lifes and invites itself in our watches, our phones, our cars, our houses, and even in our clothes.
We no longer send missives, letters are getting scarce, text messages and emails a daily occurrence.

Thanks to the Internet, encyclopedias, dictionaries and other knowledge are within reach of a click. It seems rather obvious if not logical for a book to follow the same path.

Two millennia earlier, before being replaced by the codex, the volumen alone was considered to be a real book. Why then look the other way and reject a technological advancement of the medium? Will it be necessary to wait two centuries for the eBook to be a simple book?

Reading my post, you had to roll down the scroll bard. In actual fact, you acted the same way an Ancient Egypt reader would, you have unrolled a volumen. The only difference is that it is digital and present everywhere on the web.
Nowadays, the volumen has no physical format with the exception of the Torah of the religious Service, the parchment is then called the Sefer Torah.

If you make time to describe the medium of the eBook, you notice that the tablet computer or the e-reader adopts the format of the Sumerian clay tablet and that the pages unroll like scrolls of papyri.

After the volumen came the codex, after the codex the manuscript, after the manuscript the printed book. The printed book will one day be replaced by the eBook.

All these objects are portable gatherings of items presenting a plane surface on which a text can be written and last for a long time.

All these objects are books.

No matter what they say, the pet hate of writers, if not the writer’s block, definitively is the reading of reviews written about their series of words.

And for good reason! A chronicle, positive or negative, once online, there’s no way to dodge the consequences. It’s either the scaffold or a breath of fresh air.

I’m no exception, this first chronicle, I expected it and dreaded it all the same.

In the end, the first chronicle turns out to be a real breath of fresh air.

My thanks go to the author for suggesting me the new version of this short story (the former one being in my To-Read Pile but not read).
Ragazza can’t get over the fact she and her friend parted ways a few months back. She’s trying to put her feeling on paper when someone knocks on the door.
Both characters are nameless.
The main heroine writes poetry, samples of which are present in the reading. Byam Jinx Oxymoron’s pen is also quite poetic.
A short-story full of strong emotions. This story is an extension of the author’s pen – overflowing with sensitivity, sensuality, beauty and intensity.
A moving story.
Quite the discovery.

Ta-daaa... !

… a text message.

My aunt encouraged me to take a look at a website, Bookstory’s website.
Curiosity is inspired.
The look is taken.
The attention is attracted.
And here I was rummaging in this website from top to bottom, its concept is more than innovative: playing the middleman between author and publisher, and shouldering the role of an editorial compass.

After all… pourquoi pas?

Only a while ago, short stories were only published in collections. Today, opportunity is given to me to publish one of me short stories as an eBook and to publish it ON ITS OWN! It would have been idiotic of me not to give it a go, don’t you think?

The thing with this company is that I can attach my own cover to my series of words!  For the photo aficionado that I am, I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about it!
My cover already was the ready-made thing: I alter the picture just a tiny bit, add title and pen name.
Ta-daaa…! The trick is done.
Without even thinking twice, I sent my typescript with its cover Made in Yours Truly. That was February 12th.

A few weeks and an email later, that was April 24th at night.
One missed phone call.
One message left on the answering machine.
One listening.
Two listening! (just in case, you never know)
One blissful smile forming on my lips.
You guessed it, I had just missed the live confirmation, by Guillaume Fournier, that my series of words had been peer-reviewed and approved by the board of Bookstory!

One resounding Yes! and two tight fists shot in the air later, I called this modern time Hermes back. The conversation was more or less a monologue: I barely managed to get two sentences straight and agreed to another call in order to organize a meeting.

That was on a full moon night…

I don’t know why, I’ve felt like I was having this compelling urge to immortalize this very moment…

Digression aside, the following week I received a publisher’s contract to read and arrangement to meet was made for May 3rd. Towards Toulon, place de la Liberté at 1:00 PM.

About ready to burst at the seam with excitement, I anticipated quite a bit and arrived early at the meeting place.
Just the time to have a bite to eat at the local Quick, to catch the eyes of a biker who just got a handkerchief from his satchel (don’t ask me why I remember this detail) and to calm down a little, there I was, outside, sitting at the base of the Fontaine de la Fédération, enjoying the sun.

Just the time to take a few photographs, I positioned myself so as to keep an eye on the square.

It was 12:35 PM; I still had some time to spare.

I kept myself busy as I could.
My restlessness kept me from any focusing.
Notepad and pen, I was drawing the scene of the current series of words.

Place. Furniture. Light. I was adjusting the characters position.

My phone rang.
Ah!
I grabbed it glancing around the square.
The biker was about ten meters away, phone in hand. Well, well…

I took a look at my phone screen: Guillaume Fournier, 12:55 PM.

I answered it. I had suspected it; I was having a meeting with the biker! Just goes to show that life is odd that way.

Followed on a discussion over a coffee that lasted a little more than an hour.
Ideas flourished.
Thrice, ink blackened a publisher’s contract.
THE publisher’s contract. The very first one.
And just like any other first time, it does a little something.

Brought to an end after 9 months, Rêve… saw the light of day in 2009. It’s my baby. Of ink and paper, certainly, but my baby nonetheless.
Four years later, here we are, the eBook form of my short story is available! And if in addition my series of words is overwhelmingly supported, the print version could be seeing the light of day! That’s something to stir your imagination!

A new chapter was beginning… thanks to a text message and to Bookstory.

That was the story of the signature!
